What is Trivia Weekend?
Trivia Weekend is a 50 hour trivia marathon put on by 88.1 KVSC. Questions feature a wide range of topics including (but not limited to) movies, pop culture, sports, science, history and politics.
How does it work?
Each team has a place they call their headquarters, where they gather for the weekend. 88.1 KVSC broadcasts the questions and the point values over the air, and the teams call in during the allotted time frame to a phone bank with the answers. Each team who answers correctly are awarded the points. The team with the most points at the end of the weekend wins.
What do you win?
The top teams wins a traveling trophy, and the top 3 teams win random swag. Mostly, we win bragging rights. It's not about the winning though, it's about the game (or just besting your friends who are playing on the other teams!).
How much does it cost?
Our team asks for a $5 minimum donation. This helps cover the cost of registration, the extra electrical, water and heating costs, cost of adding an additional phone line and other unexpected expenses that tend to arise.
When is Trivia Weekend?
Trivia weekend is always held on the second full weekend of February. This year, Trivia weekend will take place February 10-12, 2012.
50 hours? In a row?
Yes! The contest starts at 5pm on Friday afternoon, and runs until 7pm on Sunday night. After the contest ends we gather for the award ceremony at Stewart Hall, and then head over the the Red Carpet for a celebration!
What if I don't know a lot of trivia?
We like to say: It's not what you know, it's how good you are at finding the information! We look answers up on the internet, in books and magazines, we call people, and sometimes we find the answers simply by brainstorming and working through different ideas as a group.
Of course, we also need people to support the team in other ways, such as: recording questions/answers in a book, calling the answers into the phone bank, kitchen duty (keeping on top of dishes, making coffee, and putting out food) or just backing up others when they need to take a nap. There are a lot of ways you can participate!
I would love to play, but I can't commit to a whole weekend!
That's ok! You can play as much or as little as you want. We need people most during the overnight and morning hours, but whenever you can join us, we would love to have you!
What do I need to bring?
First and foremost, your brains and your random trivia knowledge! Other items that may be helpful are: your cell phone, your computer, books and movies, and any other reference materials you may have. Even if you think it's not important, bring it! Also, you are welcome to bring snacks, drinks, or meals to share.
If you plan to stay at the headquarters for the whole weekend, you may also want a toothbrush, deodorant, etc.
What kind of information do you need?
The questions run the gambit. Anything and everything is trivia! There is a different theme every year, and some of the questions are directly related to the theme, so you can start by keeping your eyes out for anything that you think could relate to the theme. Is there anything I can do before the weekend to help?
Sure! As soon as we register (usually early December), we will receive a packet of images (visual trivia), we would love to have your help identifying the pictures, and finding out as much info as you can about them!
